- SOLAR
Upstate New York has 1,509 solar farms of 250 kW and up, totaling about 4,721 MW AC.
- DATA CENTERS
Each week: new grid requests, DEC permit notices, town reviews and land clearing at data center sites, often before any announcement.
- BIOSECURITY AND WATER WATCH
Bloom notices, county-level avian flu updates and invasive species reports, in season.
- FROM THE FIELD
One image or finding from our own drone and lake surveys.
- MAP OF THE WEEK

LIVE · ENERGY DEVELOPMENT
Solar & Data Centers
Every solar farm of 250 kW and up across the 53 upstate counties, checked so no project is counted twice, and every data center project we can find from its grid request, permits and reviews.
New development tracker
LiveEvery week we compare the state grid queue, every upstate utility's interconnection queue, state siting permits and federal and state project lists, and log what changed: new requests, re-filings, withdrawals, stage changes and projects that came online.
Dates for grid requests and withdrawals come from NYISO. Other changes are dated the week we detected them. Sources: NYISO interconnection queue, utility interconnection queues (National Grid, NYSEG/RG&E, Central Hudson, O&R), ORES, EIA-860M, NYSERDA, DEC air permits, county planning boards, county IDAs and regional news.
Data center early warning
LiveA data center leaves a paper trail long before a press release. It asks the state grid operator for power, applies to DEC for an air permit for its backup generators, goes through a town or IDA environmental review, and clears land. We read every one of these records each week, group them by project and flag what is new.
How a project shows up
State rulemaking
Sources: NYISO interconnection queue (Load Projects), NYS DEC Environmental Notice Bulletin and air permits, county planning boards, IDAs and local news, Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery. Sizes are the power requested from the grid, not built capacity, and a request is not a commitment to build. "Not yet in the news" means we found no news story about the project when we last checked. People who file requests in their own name are not named here.
Moratoriums and local rules
LiveTown, village and city moratoriums and siting laws for solar, battery storage and data centers, from the last two years. We read county planning board referrals, IDA agendas and local news every week and keep the latest status of each rule.
Read from public documents by Claude and kept only when the finding is clear. Check the linked source before relying on a status; a county referral means a law was proposed, not adopted.
Seen from space
LiveEvery week we look at each planned project site in Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and compare this season with the same months two years earlier. When new panels or graded ground show up, the project has started building, often before any filing says so. We also scan all 53 counties for new arrays that no filing mentions.
Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data, processed by Nexus Frameworks. Images are 20 m per pixel season composites. Sites are located from EIA plant coordinates or the project address on record; a project whose address is a mailing address may not be checked accurately.
PIPELINE · NOT BUILT YET
Planned solar
Solar farms in upstate New York that are proposed, in permitting, approved or under construction, from the state grid queue, federal and state project lists, state siting permits and every upstate utility's interconnection queue. Projects reported by more than one source are combined so each is counted once. Community and commercial projects of 250 kW and up are included.
Planned projects
| Project | County | MW AC | Stage | Expected online | Reported by |

Largest farms
Farms by size
Most upstate solar is built in community-scale blocks of 1 to 5 MW. Fewer than 20 farms are larger than 10 MW.
Data center development
LiveData centers need large, reliable grid connections, and solar and storage projects compete for the same substations. We track data center power requests, permits and site work across upstate New York, so developers, utilities and towns can see where new demand and new supply meet.

No double counting
Every source record belongs to exactly one farm. Our audit checks 7,676 records statewide. Sizes marked Verified were confirmed against public project sources.
What's included
Farms of 250 kW AC and up, plus mapped farms with no reported size. Farms without a confirmed location are listed but not mapped. Landowner and substation details are kept private.

THE COMPANY
Spatial intelligence for upstate New York
Nexus Frameworks is a Syracuse company that maps what's being built, grown and changing across the 53 counties of upstate New York, and turns that data into forecasts people can act on.
Everything runs on one spatial data engine. It integrates public agency records with proprietary data from drone surveys, field sampling and research partnerships. The result is one trusted view of upstate New York today, and a clearer view of tomorrow.
